Cabañeros, straddling the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real, is far more than just a National Park: it is a unique place in the world. One of the planet’s best preserved Mediterranean forests sweeps through its mountains, valleys and rugged plains, and is home to some of the most endangered Iberian wildlife such as the Iberian lynx, black stork, black vulture or the imperial eagle.
Holm oak, cork oak and the fragrant Mediterranean scrub with rockrose, rosemary, thyme and lavender can be found in the mountains, ravines and plains, the unique Spanish Serengeti. Spotting majestic birds such as griffin vultures or other birds of prey, and sighting deer and roe is fairly easy.
The park has visitors centres, museums and information points spread around the perimeter of the protected area, where we can enjoy exhibitions on the natural and cultural values of the park and its environment. To learn about the area in more detail, we recommend doing one of the routes - independently or with a guide - so you don’t miss any details about the richness of this unique area. Visit on foot, by bike or in a 4x4. There are several starting points for these routes: Navas de Estena, Retuerta del Bullaque, Horcajo de los Montes, Alcoba or Casa Palillos.
In Navas de Estena, you can do a pleasant walk in the Boquerón del Estena and rest in the Tablas del Acebo y las Fuentes leisure area.
Retuerta del Bullaque (featuring the Zoorama Wildlife Museum) is another starting point for the guided routes.
We cross the Park to reach Horcajo de los Montes, home to an interesting visitors centre, Alcoba de los Montes, with its Ethnographic Museum, and Pueblonuevo del Bullaque where we take the turn off towards Casa Palillos, home to a comprehensive exhibition of the Park’s natural and cultural values, with botanical and ethnographic trails accessible for persons with reduced mobility and services, car parks, a picnic area and observatory with excellent views of the foothills of the local mountain range.
Right on the Park limits, don’t miss the Torre de Abraham reservoir lookout point.
Here you can check all the information about the routes and make reservations.
