Itinerary I for the Tulaytula medina route is one of the ten journeys crossing the five provinces in the region and sheds light on the al-Andalus legacy in the heart of Toledo.
Known in the Moorish period as Tulaytula, Toledo was one of the most important cities in the central Iberian Peninsula between the 8th and 11th centuries. This must-see destination for cultural tourism fans was the capital of the Central March, one of the main defensive divisions of the Emirate and Caliphate of Cordoba. It later became the capital of the Taifa of Toledo.
This period of Islamic splendour left a deep mark on the urban planning, architecture and scientific development of the city, making Toledo one of the most fascinating historical enclaves for exploring the richness of the al-Andalus past.
Touring the ancient Tulaytula medina is a unique experience for travellers seeking to understand al-Andalus history first-hand. This is a journey through time that allows visitors to admire examples of temples of the three faiths that coexisted in the city: mosques, synagogues and churches, many transformed after the Christian conquest, but preserving elements of their original architecture.
Wandering around one of the most beautiful cities in the world, we’ll come across defensive constructions that have their origins in the Islamic period, such as the wall, the citadel and the alcázar fortress. Palaces and noble houses, showcasing the civil power of the time, delight visitors. Everyday spaces such as the Arab baths (hammām), areas for craftsmanship and places related to the development of botany, astronomy and other sciences cultivated in al-Andalus are on display.
If you want to see Toledo through a different lens, the legacy of Tulaytula offers a unique immersion in al-Andalus history. Through its monuments, hidden corners and heritage, visitors can discover how the Islamic past is still alive in every alley and each small square of this World Heritage city.
Don’t miss the chance to travel back in time and explore one of the most exciting episodes in our history.
